Stars Of The Party
Stars of the Party- “We are the Toast of Sacramento and the Thousand Island dressing of pop punk”
I had the pleasure of seeing Stars of the Party at the end of March and it was a lot of fun to listen to them cover some awesome songs of the 90s-punk genre. If you have also been influenced by iconic bands like; Yellowcard, Rise Against, Blink-182, Slipknot, The Casualties, The Unseen, Under oath, Aiden, Anti-Flag, and On the Last Day, then you will like what Stars of the Party are up to. Brandon also finds influence in Flea, John Entwistle, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, and Tony Levin. He holds back a lot in this band because he doesn’t normally play with a pick, but his general style of playing is strongly influenced by them and in absolute no way representative of these individuals.
Stars of the Party formally came together in the summer of 2016. It all started with Brandon
and Sebastian meeting at their first band practice together in a local country cover band. Immediately there was a click with each other. That was the first and only practice that band ever had before gigging 5-6 times a month. These country bands were needed to fuel them as musicians financially. Later on, Brandon met Blake in another country band. Blake also had an active pop-punk band at the time but eventually it didn’t last. Brandon was immediately drawn to Blake’s love of busting out random riffs during practice/shows and teasing certain popular songs, his jubilant attitude and his interest in a lot of the same music. Of course, there was tons of joking around about starting up a pop-punk band together and bringing in Sebastian because he loved playing pop-punk too and Brandon loved playing with him. Power trio! Once they got their first practice in, the connection was very strong. Immediately Blake began tossing out what they call the skeleton versions of his songs.
Their 5-song EP ‘’3-WAY” was released on June 29th, of 2017. They have physical copies for the hipsters, and its available on just about every music streaming platform you can think of like Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, etc. to name a few. They recorded everything with our good friend Sean Stack at Fat Cat Recording Studio in Sacramento. They just got out of the studio a couple months ago, and are waiting for three more originals. It is undecided if those will be will released collectively as an EP or individually. Be on the lookout for new music from them this summer of 2018!
For songwriting, Blake typically starts tossing out what they call skeleton versions of his songs, Brandon refines them, and Sebastian would add the drums finally. “One thing we feel is special about us, is we don’t sugar-coat anything to ourselves. If something sucks, and we wouldn’t listen to that ourselves, we don’t move forward.” When asked why they chose this genre of music they said “We play pop-punk because to us, right around the mid-2000s was seriously some of the best music created in the genre. Since then it has really died off as a whole, but there’s several bands locally like us that are wanting to keep it alive and well. As kids, warped tour was the thing to look forward to in the summer. Shows nowadays are nothing like they used to be. Ultimately, we love playing music. We feel that pop-punk is universally liked, Its catchy, but also intense. There’s so many sub-genres to take advantage of like emo, ska, straight punk, grunge, etc. Possibilities are endless. We will play pop-punk for as long as we can and hope we can build a name for ourselves and this genre. Stars of the Party is the red-headed step child of classic and modern punk.” Their plans for the future are to continue being true to themselves, work for everything they do, seize any opportunities and continue playing live music.
